John Smith, a 15-year-old from the planet Lorien, and Henri, his Cepan, are running from the Mogadorians, another alien race that is hunting John and eight other teenage Lorics residing on planet Earth. These nine teens have special powers called Legacies, and they must use them in order to protect their race. Some of these powers include telekenesis, lumen, healing, telepathy, elemental manipulation, and enhancement. In these series, these teens and their allies from all across the world unite together as they battle for their survival of their race. Along the way, many friends die and John has to learn to cope with these losses.
